What Breaks the Pope's Heart?

You know a lot about someone if you know what breaks their heart. In all the instant commentary on Pope Francis' remarks about gay priests, one thing has been lost. The pope did not, of course, say that homosexual acts are not sinful. What he did say is that if a priest has a same-sex attraction, and has wrestled with it, and perhaps even fallen down a couple of times, this does not lead him to cast judgment. On the other hand, when the Holy Father spoke to seminarians in Rome a few weeks ago, he said that when he sees a priest driving a new model car, it breaks his heart. 'Nuf said.

Abortion in Va Gov's Race

Another story at Politico. This one on a new poll about the role of abortion in the Virginia Governor's race. I am suspicious of partisan polls: pollsters know who is paying their bills and like to yield a result that satisfies. That said, I think the results point to an issue I have been raising, that we need to persuade people on the issue of abortion or we yield it to the politicians and then it plays out in ways that we will not like.

Thank God for Steve King

This article in Politico highlights the latest House Republican leader who has had to distance himself from outrageous remarks made by Congressman Steve King in his effort to sabotage immigration reform. Having previously compared immigrants to dogs, King is now suggesting that most immigrants are drug smugglers. Nice. In the past two days, Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Kantor and, now, Cong.

Francis in Rio

It is thrilling to watch Pope Francis engage people in Rio. He seems as easy in his manner when he is walking down a red carpet in a lavish government palace with the city’s mayor as he is when he is entering the humblest of dwellings in the slum known as Vargihna. But, the ease Pope Francis exhibits in these human interactions does not appear, at least to me, to be anything learned from a PR consultant, nor even from a God-given genial demeanor, although the pope surely has that and it just as surely helps.
