Church groups try to stop foreclosures


Church and charitable organizations have always stepped up to the plate to aid the homeless. But what about helping prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place? That is the goal of a national network of faith-based groups, homeowners and community organizers who met with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner earlier this month to talk about the issue of home foreclosures.

Belgian Archbishop Hit with Pie


"The saga of Belgian Archbishop André-Joseph Léonard took a turn on Nov. 1 when Léonard was hit with a pie during an All Saints’ Day Mass.

Reuters reported on the "entarté" ("pie-in-the-face") episode in a Nov. 6 article, noting that the pastry-wielding assailant struck after the archbishop had exacerbated outrage over the pedophile priest crisis by saying that retired clerical offenders should not face criminal charges. The archbishop had also raised hackles with a comment to the effect that AIDS serves as retribution against gays for engaging in sexual behavior with one another."

The outrageous behavior was filmed and is on YouTube.

Cardinals to discuss sex abuse crisis Nov. 19


A number of hot-button issues facing Catholicism, including the sexual abuse crisis, will be discussed by all the cardinals of the world on Nov. 19, just ahead of a consistory to induct new members into the church’s most exclusive club.

The Vatican announced today that the cardinals, already planning to gather in Rome for a Nov. 20 ceremony for the creation of 24 new members, will take part in a “day of reflection and prayer” on Nov. 19.

Oprah talks with men sexually abused as boys


200 men discuss childhood sexual abuse on two-part episode of 'The Oprah Winfrey Show

The first episode on Friday, Nov. 5, began as each member of the audience holds a photo of himself at the age at which he says he was first abused. Then, joined by Oprah, Tyler and Dr. Howard Fradkin, a psychologist who specializes in working with male survivors of sexual abuse and assault, the men came forward to share their stories and experiences.

Ireland Catholic dioceses lose millions in stock market bets


Just when one wouldn't think things could get worse for Catholics in the Emerald Isle, a news report discloses that Catholic dioceses have lost millions of dollars in stock market investments in the Bank of Ireland and in the Allied Irish Bank.

'Urban monk' lightens up CTA audience

His stories track the life of a young man ambushed by the gospels, carrying evangelical vigor into a deeper radical Catholic commitment.
