Top leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called Tuesday for passage of laws granting statewide protections against housing and employment discrimination for gay and lesbian Utahns -- as long as those measures safeguard religious freedom.
The move, one LGBT advocates have been pushing for years, provides a major boost for the prospects of a state nondiscrimination statute. Such proposals have been bottled up in the legislature for years, despite the church's historic endorsement of similar protections in Salt Lake City ordinances in 2009.

Pope Francis in his pastoral theology of mercy and inclusion is moving the church away from an ecclesiastical vision of "smaller but purer" to a church that embraces the wounded and frail, San Francisco Auxiliary Bishop Robert McElroy told a group of Catholics gathered at the headquarters of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael on Jan. 22. Pope Francis has appointed Fr. Daniel Garcia, the vicar general of the diocese of Austin, Texas, as an auxiliary bishop of the diocese.
Garcia, 54, is an Austin diocesan priest and also is moderator of the curia.

The newly named auxiliary bishop will assist Bishop Joe Vasquez, who has headed the Austin diocese since 2010.
His episcopal ordination is scheduled for March 3.

Mom was a firm believer that everyone had a vocation, a call to serve God with their best talents and deepest desires.
