Pope Francis names Bishop Burns of Juneau to head Dallas Diocese

Bishop Edward J. Burns of Juneau, Alaska is named bishop of Dallas: Pope Francis has named Burns to be bishop of Dallas, succeeding now-Cardinal Kevin J. Farrell, who headed the Dallas Diocese until he was named in August to be the first prefect of the new Vatican office for laity, family and life. Burns, 59, has headed the Diocese of Juneau since 2009. 

Pope writes to Syrian president, pleading for peace and aid corridors

Syria: Pope Francis urged Syrian President Bashar Assad to do everything possible to end the war in his country, to protect civilians and to ensure humanitarian agencies can deliver emergency aid to the people.Syria's SANA news agency reported Assad met Dec. 12 with new Cardinal Mario Zenari, the papal nuncio to Syria, and that the cardinal delivered a letter from the pope.

Participants of landmark Vatican just war conference to meet again in Rome

Several representatives of groups that participated in a landmark Vatican meeting last spring to reevaluate the Catholic church’s long-held just war theory will be meeting again in Rome next week to carry forward their discussions.

About 15 people will be meeting under the aegis of the Catholic Nonviolence Initiative, a new group created after the April meeting to focus on promoting the practice of nonviolence in church teaching.
