Not just another 'trade meeting,' convocation seeks to unify U.S. church

This summer's Convocation of Catholic Leaders comes at a time when the U.S. Catholic Church is seeking how best to respond to a changing social landscape.

Called by the bishops, the historic convocation will find more than 3,000 Catholic leaders — bishops, clergy, religious and laypeople — meeting July 1-4 in Orlando, Florida, to focus on how the pope's 2013 apostolic exhortation, "Evangelii Gaudium" ("The Joy of the Gospel"), applies in the United States.

New bishop of Pueblo urged to help faithful accept teachings of Christ

Citing the words of Pope Francis, Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila of Denver told the Diocese of Pueblo's newly ordained Bishop Stephen J. Berg that bishops and priests are shepherds who "should take on the smell of the sheep."

The archbishop also called on Berg during his episcopal ordination Feb. 27 as the fifth bishop of Pueblo to help the faithful accept the teachings of Jesus in a time when people readily turn away from God.

Retired Missouri bishop dies in home country of Ireland at age 82

Retired Bishop Raymond J. Boland of Kansas City-St. Joseph died Feb. 27 in Cork, Ireland, in a hospice facility surrounded by his family. He was 82.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated March 4 in Ireland.

Bishop Robert W. Finn, who succeeded Boland as head of the Missouri diocese in 2005, said the retired prelate had returned to Ireland from Kansas City with his brother, retired Bishop J. Kevin Boland of Savannah, Ga., Feb. 22 "to fulfill his wish to be buried in his native country."
