Spokane Bishop Thomas Daly issued a statement this morning asking prayers for a man shot to death by Spokane police last evening outside the House of Charity, a facility operated by the diocese's Catholic Community Services.

Daly wrote: "Mr. Michael Kurtz, a well-known client of the House of Charity, was evidently distraught and ended up being shot and killed by Spokane Police officers at approximately 7 p.m. I want to assure every one of my sympathy and prayers for Mr. Kurtz and all those who were involved in this tragedy."

Kurtz reportedly charged police officers with a knife in hand while calling out, "Kill me, kill me."
