Director of Media Relations and Social Media Communications

Position Summary

  • Well-rounded communications expert who has worked both sides of the media; has intimate knowledge of newsroom function, and how to pitch stories with social media, TV and radio that garner effective and wide coverage
  • Highly­­-motivated, creative team player with the ability to quickly grasp new, complex issues, and adapt to fast-changing environments especially between Church and the community
  • Builds and fosters effective and respectful and collaborative relations with co-workers at the Pastoral Ministry departments and parishes and all stakeholders on online media channels
  • Is a quick study to issues of importance of the Catholic Church  

 

Reports to:  Vice Chancellor and Director of Pastoral Ministries

 

Responsibilities:

  • Administration, Communication and Media
  • Responsible for the organization’s media relations and communications strategies, from high level planning to overseeing day-to-day execution
  • Develop and execute corporate communications plans with sometimes demanding and quick turn-around during times of crisis-management
  • Serves to regularly update the diocesan website, Facebook, YouTube and other social media platforms under the direction of the Vice Chancellor and focus on changing messages from the Bishop
  • Interface and develop relationships with the pastors and parishes in the on-going promotion of the activities of the Church of Monterey both on the diocesan website and parish websites
  • Participates in meetings/activities of diocesan directors of pastoral ministries and acts as a resource in teaching effective media design, consistency of message, color, etc.
  • Editor of the annual Diocesan Directory
  • Regularly analyzes metrics to measure the effectiveness and impact of relative media usage for our diocese.
  • At selected times, may serve as official spokesperson for the Diocese
  • At times serves in drafting selected diocesan communications
  • Updates weekly messages from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and California Catholic Conference (CCC)
  • Responds to the general diocesan email inbox and forwards to appropriate parties as necessary
  • “Contact Us” website forms monitored daily

 

  • Public Relations
  • Serves as public relations resource for the Diocese of Monterey
  • Liaison between the local Church and the secular and religious media
  • Prepares and disseminates press releases for secular and religious media
  • Responds to media inquiries
  • Available as a public relations resource to diocesan departments, parishes and schools
  • In close communication with the Bishop’s Office via the Vice Chancellor
  • Represents the Catholic perspective effectively in the secular arena

 

  •   Technical Execution
  •   Canva messaging drafted and posted on diocesan website and Facebook
  •   Live Stream links posted and ‘shared’ when necessary
  •   Posts Campaign and other CCC Materials – often regularly
  •   Proposition and Ballot materials to be shared from CCC and USCCB regularly   
  •   Incoming Emails monitored daily and forwarded to appropriate parties
  •   Video editing – utilizing programs such as iMovie
  •   Video Content – utilizing iPad and Teleprompter applications
  •   Conducts filming for Video Messaging of the Bishop
  • Hours:  35 hours, full time position with some weekend work as required and approved  

  • Education:  Preferred B.A. or higher degree in communications and media
