Tom Coffin worked 45 years as a federal prosecutor and U.S. magistrate judge before retiring in 2016 from the bench. He received his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1970 and is a lifelong practicing Catholic. He lives in Oregon with his wife of 48 years.

Maria Lopez de Felix wanted to join her husband and build a life in the United States when she crossed the border from Mexico illegally in 1979. A little compassion from Border Control agents could have prevented her rape and murder.
