Historians John O’Malley, SJ, of Georgetown University, and Mordechai Feingold, of the California Institute of Technology, will speak tomorrow, Sept. 14, at Georgetown University, during the first of Woodstock Theological Center’s three discussions titled “Georgetown, Jesuits, and the Sciences.”

Here is the press release:

JESUITS ASK BIG QUESTIONS OF SCIENCE IN THREE-PART SERIES

WASHINGTON, DC - On Wednesday, September 14, the Woodstock Theological Center launches a three-part series on Jesuits and the Sciences at Georgetown University. In the face of public suspicion about the incompatibility of faith and science, Jesuits draw from a 400-year-old tradition of exploring the boundaries of scientific possibility to say that the important question is not whether evolution is taught in schools but how science is integrated into the educational process as a whole and what scientific advancements might mean for the future of the human species.

The first session, on September 14, will feature historians Mordechai Feingold of the California Institute of Technology and John O'Malley, SJ, of Georgetown University. The second session, on September 19, will feature John C. Haughey, SJ and Ilia Delio, OSF, who are both Woodstock Senior Fellows in Religion and Science. The third session, on September 28, will feature John Braverman, SJ, a biologist at St. Joseph University, Cyril P. Opeil, SJ, a physicist at Boston College, and Kevin FitzGerald, SJ, a biochemist at Georgetown University.

All three sessions will take place between 5PM-7PM in the Lohrfink Auditorium in the McDonough School of Business Rafik B. Hariri Building at Georgetown University and are open to the public.

The Woodstock Theological Center is an independent, Jesuit-sponsored research institute located at Georgetown University that carries out theological and ethical reflection on the human problems of today. More details can be found at http://woodstock.georgetown.edu.
