At Religion & Politics, Leigh Eric Schmidt looks back at Time magazine's "Is God Dead?" cover story. This is a fine essay, and reminds us that one of the arguments at the time was that the pews may have been filled, but a lot of the congregants were "practical atheists" whose faith had little or no impact on the their lives apart from Sunday morning.

What's the matter with Kansas? There may be many answers to that question, but one of the foremost is the state's Secretary of State Kris Kobach, whom Politico reports is taking credit for Donald Trump's plan to build a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico. I am waiting for the Kansas bishops to say something about this rightwing zealot. I am not holding my breath while I wait.

For those of us of Polish descent, today is a great day, the feast of St. Stanislaus. If you want to understand how deep the cult of this martyred bishop is, visit Wawel Cathedral where his tomb is smack in the middle of the crossing, so that the main altar is not visible from the main body of the nave. But, the cathedral in Krakow is a jewel, even without the sightlines.
