The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne*, Ind., reports that the Fort Wayne-South Bend Catholic diocese wants a judge to toss out the recent jury verdict awarding a former teacher hundreds of thousands of dollars in a discrimination case, saying there was insufficient evidence presented during the trial showing that the church discriminated.

Former language arts teacher Emily Herx sued the diocese when officials at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School declined to renew her contract after she underwent a third round of in vitro fertilization. The week before Christmas, a federal court jury agreed with her, awarding her a total of $1.9 million.
